Day 1

Joss woke me up at about 7:30 this morning - she was going out early today and the 3 beers from last night had totally knocked me out.


Joss had an exciting day in Southampton to look forward to with Kieren, Grandma and Mavis while Hattie and I were off to Heathrow at lunchtime for our trip to Amsterdam tomorrow.


Difficult to tell who was more excited ….?


Joss left at about 8:30 and after breakfast Hattie and I went shopping for some essentials for Joss while we were gone, and for sweets for the journey for us.


Back home we packed our cases and then I decided to have a bath.


I knew instantly that Hattie had decided to do something really nice like doing the washing up.


I knew this as I stepped into my tepid bath…


Oh well….


After that we had lunch and I went for a walk - I’ve resigned myself to not keeping up my 10k challenge over the next few days but I could at least end on a high today.


We set off at 1pm and the roads were amazingly clear.


It made us all the happier to hear that Joss had had such a marvellous day 👀


We arrived at the Thistle Hotel and our room was compact to say the least.






We decided to go to the local pub for a couple, but that turned into a couple of couple - well we are on holiday aren’t we?







As an aside, has anyone seen this many urinal blocks in one urinal before? Incredible scenes!!!





We went back to the hotel’s Sport’s bar for food and I was very disappointed with the angle we had with the TV





2 blokes were sat at 2 different 4 person tables with the best views - livid!!!!


The food was nice and it was good to find Camden ales.





We called it a night after I swapped the house for a Yorkie bar in the hotel shop - it was totally worth it.


Big day tomorrow and making sensible choices now means that we’ll both be raring to go.

We were both awake before 9 a.m. and out of the room by 10. I let Hattie decide what we were doing for breakfast, and she decided on pancakes, so off we went. Our first choice was so busy that there was a queue waiting outside in the cold, so we went on to the next one. We both went for savoury ones— mine with cheese and ham, Hattie’s had cheese and bacon. When it came out, it looked good. By the end, though— we were both glad to have finished them— they were nice, but just too much and ever so slightly tasted burned. Oh well, at least we’ve tried Dutch pancakes now. We had an hour or so to kill, so we decided to do some souvenir shopping. I agonised for ages on what to get Joss, and I’m not convinced I’ve done well— hoping that the agonising bit will make up for the final product. Day 2

The alarm boomed at 9:00 Another night that proves alcohol aids sleeping. No hangover either - it’s a winning day I thought, but I was being too optimistic as 3 things went wrong in a row. Firstly, as I contemplated going to the loo and having to wipe my arse like an animal, I realised that not only was the loo too close to the wall so that my left leg was in full contact with the cold tiling, but there was nowhere to put my left foot as they’d strategically positioned a doorstop there, so I had to sit with my left leg stretched out. Then, once I’d “finished the job” and reached round for the paper, I realised that its holder was broken, as I touched it and the paper rolled to the other side of the room. 🙄 Thirdly, the shower was even colder than yesterday’s tepid bath, so by the time I’d left the bathroom, I feared for the rest of the day. Day 3

This morning I woke up just before the 9am alarm so was spared the rude awakening. Hattie was up first and volunteered to get the bathroom stuff done first - I followed and the shower was much better than yesterday although a gap in the screen did allow for a fair bit of spillage. I’m dubious about the toilet too as it is not floor mounted - I don’t think I’ve ever sat down so gingerly. I found a cafe that did toasties for breakfast. I had cheese, bacon and onion and Hattie had kimchi - both were delicious. We stopped off at the room as I’d forgotten my pass key and then off to the train station. At the cafe we’d both bought our first class returns to Eindhoven and it was easy to find platform 4. The train pulled in and we sought out the first class upper tier of the double decker train. It wasn’t that plush but very roomy and very quiet - no kids - excellent. Especially as one seemed to go ballistic as soon as we left Utrecht.
