Day 3
This morning I woke up just before the 9am alarm so was spared the rude awakening.
Hattie was up first and volunteered to get the bathroom stuff done first - I followed and the shower was much better than yesterday although a gap in the screen did allow for a fair bit of spillage.
I’m dubious about the toilet too as it is not floor mounted - I don’t think I’ve ever sat down so gingerly.
I found a cafe that did toasties for breakfast.
I had cheese, bacon and onion and Hattie had kimchi - both were delicious.
We stopped off at the room as I’d forgotten my pass key and then off to the train station.
At the cafe we’d both bought our first class returns to Eindhoven and it was easy to find platform 4.
The train pulled in and we sought out the first class upper tier of the double decker train.
It wasn’t that plush but very roomy and very quiet - no kids - excellent. Especially as one seemed to go ballistic as soon as we left Utrecht.
We got to Eindhoven on time and immediately found the nearest sports’ bar the Mainstreet.
We had a couple of drinks in there and some, what they call, finger food.
The first was meat and potato croquettes (a Dutch specialty) and the second was buffalo wings.
Both were delicious.
Then we walked to the stadium - the sat nav said we had had 5 minutes more but I think we got the gist of where we were going.
As we walked we went through a massive pedestrian way and did Hattie comment on the architecture and the statues - no - what she said was isn’t that McDonald’s massive ….🙄
We first went to the club shop where we bought various things and because I flustered the guy saying how good his English was, he forgot to charge us for a shirt.
We both noticed this but I muttered “ keep walking” under my breath and we made it safely outside.
I then bought beers to celebrate and in the hope that I got to use the outside urinals.
Hattie didn’t want that to happen so quickly ushered me inside when the gates opened.
We got a couple of beers and found our way to our seats - bloody marvellous.
Before the game the Bournemouth game had started and my watch buzzed - 0-1 to Bournemouth
Brilliant.
It buzzed again 0-2 to Bournemouth
I couldn’t believe it
It buzzed a third time - Chiropody Appointment for Grandma.
Ah, less thrilled.
It was a very good game although it did lack some finesse as it looked like there were 22 mighty oak trees wandering around the pitch so little wonder that 3 goals were headers.
The game ended 2-2 with the home side getting a last minute equaliser against Utrecht but I have to say the away supporters won their own battle - they were immense.
We got out of the stadium in 2 minutes (are you listening AFCB) and went back to the sports’ bar to watch more footy as we ate burgers and chips.
There was a slight mix up with drinks as they’d assumed we were drinking half pints (how very dare they) and at the end they weren’t on the bill so again, we left quietly.
We got the train back to Amsterdam at about 8pm where Hattie promptly passed out in the warm.
We were both worn out but there was still time for gold trousers, apparently.
When the ticket inspector came she woke up in time to see someone get moved on from first class - I can’t believe I was mixing with such hoy palloy …..
We got back to the hotel about 9:30 and were both cream crackered.
Still time for me to eat something and then it’s time for bed as we’ve got all this to do again tomorrow 😊
